What makes cacao ceremonial-grade?

What differentiates ceremonial-grade cacao from other cacao you find in the health stores?

The beans

There are 3 types of cacao beans: Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario.

​

Criollo beans are the ones used for ceremonial cacao as they are low in caffeine. They’re smaller beans so harder to cultivate, that’s why they’re representing only 5% of cacao beans.

​

They can sometimes be used in conjunction with Trinitario beans, which represent 15% of cacao beans and are a bit higher in caffeine.

​

Forastero beans are the ones used by chocolate makers and represent 80% of the production.

The intention

What makes up the magic is also and very importantly the intention behind it. 

 

In everything you do, you put your energy and intention. You attract people with a similar frequency as you, low or high. The things you create carry that frequency. That’s why we’re so attracted by what artisans create: we feel the love, the intention poured into their pieces of work. 

 

Ceremonial grade cacao is created with the intention of keeping its energy as pure and potent as possible.

It starts by respecting the people involved in its creation, the harvesters, the peelers, etc., ensuring they have access to a fair wage and good working conditions, having a positive impact on the local community.

That’s also why hand work is preferred, as each hand is adding its energy to it, instead of using machines.

 

It also means respecting the environment the cacao trees are growing in. Cacao trees love growing in the shade of taller trees. A whole ecosystem and biodiversity is ensured to give cacao trees the nicest environment to develop.

 

It is also made with the intention for the cacao to be used to meet with the spirit of the plant. This sacred purpose is held from the beginning to the end of the process, from the person cultivating the tree, to the person who will sell you the block of cacao.
